It is with a mix of profound sorrow and indomitable hope that we announce the launch of 'For Our African Jews', a non-profit organization dedicated to uniting African Jews from different countries and cultures and supporting their needs.
This initiative is the brainchild of Simcha-Chaya Ben Avraham, a woman whose dedication to her cultural heritage and religious practices is only matched by her commitment to her community.
The story of 'For Our African Jews' finds its roots in personal loss. On Motsi Shabbat, December 10th, 2022, Simcha-Chaya lost her beloved sister, Purity. Purity was a devoted and dedicated member of her community. Her spirit and unyielding dedication to her community were an inspiration to all who knew her. May her soul be bound in life (BDE), and may she continue to be a blessing and rest in peace.
In the wake of Purity's passing, Simcha-Chaya found herself in Scotland, able to be by her sister's side thanks to the generosity of contributors who made it possible for her to travel. It was a difficult time, marked by profound grief and the outpouring of condolences from family, friends, and well-wishers.
However, amid the sorrow, an idea took root. A seed that would grow into a testament to Purity's life and her impact on those around her. In honoring her sister's memory, Simcha-Chaya made the decision to take forward her love for community and extend it to the wider African Jewish community.
'For Our African Jews' aims to foster a sense of unity and belonging among African Jews, offering resources to support personal, educational, and career goals, and providing financial aid to those in need. It operates with a three-pronged approach:
- Identify and Research: Discovering remote job opportunities through databases, professional networks, and community links.
- Prepare and Coach: Developing resumes, coaching candidates, and assisting with remote job placement workflows.
- Community Support: Establishing search groups, seminars, workshops, and providing ongoing mentorship for career progression.
Additionally, the non-profit provides financial assistance to those in need, such as the elderly or those facing burial expenses, and offers resources for access to food and other necessities. We aim to preserve the unique cultural traditions of African Jews through Hebrew learning materials, holiday guides, and educational events.
As we embark on this journey, we invite you to join us. Your support can make a significant difference in the lives of African Jews, helping to establish communities, support individual growth, and preserve the unique cultural traditions that define us.
We thank you for your support during this difficult time, and we hope that you will stand with us as we work towards making a positive impact on the lives of African Jews. As a 501c3 Charity, all donations to this cause are tax-deductible.
